Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before booking your Limelight IPL treatment at Laser Vantage.
-
IPL targets the dilated blood vessels that cause rosacea's characteristic redness — not just the surface appearance. The light energy is absorbed by hemoglobin in those vessels, causing them to collapse and be reabsorbed naturally by the body.
That said, it's important to set honest expectations: rosacea is a chronic condition and cannot be permanently cured by any laser or light-based device. However, Limelight IPL can significantly reduce visible redness and flushing, with results that can last for months. Maintenance treatments help sustain those results over time.
-
Most patients describe each light pulse as a mild snapping or stinging sensation — similar to a quick flick of a rubber band. A cooling gel is applied before treatment to help manage comfort, and the Limelight handpiece has built-in cooling for added relief.
Anesthesia or numbing cream is not typically required. Patients with very active rosacea or sensitive skin may notice slightly more sensation, which your provider will account for when customizing your treatment settings.
-
For rosacea and diffuse facial redness, most patients see meaningful improvement in 1 to 3 sessions, spaced approximately 4 weeks apart. Patients with more extensive vascular involvement or long-standing rosacea may benefit from additional treatments.
Because rosacea is ongoing, periodic maintenance sessions (often once or twice a year) help prevent redness from returning as new vascular changes develop.
-
There is no significant downtime. Immediately after treatment, your skin may appear slightly red or flushed — similar to a mild sunburn — and feel warm or sensitive. This typically resolves within a few hours to 1–2 days.
Some patients experience temporary mild swelling in the treated area. You can return to your normal activities the same day; however, we recommend avoiding intense heat, exercise, and direct sun exposure for 24–48 hours post-treatment.

Limelight IPL uses three adjustable wavelength programs that can be customized for different skin types and conditions. It is best suited for Fitzpatrick skin types I–III (lighter skin tones), as IPL relies on the contrast between the target (redness or pigment) and the surrounding skin.
Patients with darker skin tones, active tans, or recent self-tanning product use are generally not ideal candidates due to the increased risk of hyperpigmentation or burns. Your provider will assess your skin type during a consultation and perform a patch test when appropriate to ensure the safest settings.
-
Limelight IPL can be used on most areas of the body showing redness or vascular concerns. The most common treatment areas are the face (cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead), as well as the neck, décolleté, hands, and arms — all areas frequently exposed to sun damage and vascular changes.
-
To ensure the safest and most effective treatment, please follow these pre-treatment guidelines:
Avoid sun exposure and tanning (including spray tans, tanning beds, and tanning lotions) for a minimum of 2–4 weeks before your session. Treated skin must be at your natural baseline tone for accurate settings.
Come to your appointment with clean skin — no makeup. Skip waxing, chemical peels, and other potentially irritating skin treatments for 1–2 weeks prior. Let your provider know about any current medications, supplements, or recent skin treatments, as some may increase photosensitivity or bruising risk.
-
For vascular redness and rosacea, improvement is typically visible within 1 to 2 weeks after each session as the treated vessels are naturally cleared by the body. You may notice a gradual reduction in flushing frequency and overall facial redness.
Results continue to improve with each successive session. Final outcomes are generally assessed at your follow-up appointment, approximately 4 weeks after treatment.
-
Limelight IPL is not appropriate for everyone. You may not be a candidate if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active skin infection or open lesions in the treatment area, have melasma (which is heat-sensitive and can worsen with IPL), have had significant sun exposure or artificial tanning within the past 4 weeks, or have a history of skin cancer.
Additionally, patients on certain photosensitizing medications (such as isotretinoin or some antibiotics) may need to pause treatment. A thorough health history review is performed at your consultation to ensure IPL is appropriate for you.

Individual results may vary. Rosacea is a chronic condition; IPL can visibly improve — but not permanently cure — its appearance. A clinical consultation is required prior to treatment.
